Award winning Canadian singer Matt Andersen is currently travelling across Europe on an intimate solo tour showcasing songs from his new album Honest Man.
With over 10 million views on YouTube, two European Blues Awards, and winning Best Solo Performer at the Memphis Blues Challenge, it appears that the entire world is now discovering Andersen.
A powerhouse performer with a giant soul-filled voice and commanding stage presence, Matt has built a formidable following, the old-fashioned way – touring worldwide and letting the converted audiences and Andersen devotees spread his reputation through word of mouth.
In addition to headlining major festivals, clubs and theatres throughout North America, Europe and Australia, he has shared the stage and toured with Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Greg Allman, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Randy Bachman, Little Feat, Jonny Lang, Serena Ryder, and more.
Here is Sean Conlon’s review of Matt’s recent show in Edinburgh.
Matt Andersen – The Mash House, Edinburgh – May 22
From his first hello we were in for a treat. Matt’s singing and playing, I felt, could fill the room without the use of a PA, a soulful voice full of presence. Not only is this man a talented guitarist and vocalist, but also possesses the quality of breaking the barrier that stands between performer and audiences.
His full range vocals and faultless guitar were a treat, but the humour with which he interspersed the set with made it a very intimate and friendly gig.
An unstructured evening, the songs were selected from his back catalogue that fitted the mood of the event rather than having a set list.
Songs like Coal Mining Blues draw on the industrial heritage of his home, or the social observation number Devils Bride, with a wonderfully humorous interlude bring the songs alive, giving them personality. A depth that is often missing.
This is a musician that if you have not seen yet do so, you will love it.
Matt has released a single “Who Are You Listening To?” taken from the new album. Listen to it on You Tube
